News from Deaf La Crosse Lutheran Church
(an outreach of Shepherd of the Hills!)

Deaf Ministry is moving forward!

At the District level it is being reorganized for more effectiveness, as well as to secure tax-exempt status. Soon there will be a Board of representatives from SWD congregations, to provide input and help organize support for Deaf Ministry.

At the local level, many new things are happening. Our deaf brothers and sisters in Christ have more opportunity to learn from Pastor Reinke because they can watch him teach via streaming video. On Tuesday nights you may find them downstairs, watching Pastor Reinke on a movie screen. They can "interact" with him by computer in real time; they type in questions and Pastor Reinke's wife Dacia receives the e-mail and signs the question to her husband, who then looks at the camera and answers! Several deaf groups are participating in this way. One unexpected blessing is that a few "unconnected" deaf people have "stumbled" onto the "U-TV" program and now have a source for Bible teaching!

Pastor Reinke was in town recently, and he spent a day with the deaf congregation.
They began with Bible study and then headed out into the cold to do door-to-door canvassing, looking for deaf people, especially children.

How can we help? Pastor Reinke and Mike Lewis (lay leader) say that if we know of any deaf children who are mainstreamed into the public schools, we should tell them and their families about the opportunity to learn about God's love for them. Let them know about the study and worship opportunities with Deaf La Crosse Lutheran Church which meets at Shepherd of the Hills.

--------------------------------- FELLOWSHIP-----------------------------------
It's good and pleasing to the Lord when we gather together weekly to worship Him and to learn about Him. We also think it is pleasing to the Lord to enjoy our brothers and sisters in Christ for times of fun and fellowship. Perhaps you have suggestions or ideas of activities we could plan in the future. If you do, would you please share those ideas with us and return to our mailbox.
Thanks!
Jerry & Audrey Paul, Fellowship Co-Chairs
P.S. Fellowship activities are also a great way to introduce friends or family to our church. They may find out that Christians really do have fun!

Any Mission Offering envelopes which are turned in early will go to the mission designated by the Voters on October 19th.

There is a clipboard in the narthex with a place for you to record the name and date of death of your family member. Notes from our Deaf Ministry

Pastor Reinke
Director Deaf Institute of Theology
Concordia Seminary, St. Louis

Deaf Ministry News

Congratulations to Carla Siggers, who was featured in this month's Riverfront publication. Carla is currently doing graphic design work at the LaCrosse Tribune as a placement from Riverfront. The article is posted on our church bulletin board.

Training of local lay leaders of our deaf congregations is expanding! The new development is that there is now a monthly Deaf Pah! Leadership/Planning Ministry workshop for leaders in the South Wisconsin and Northern Illinois districts. They plan to rotate meetings from church to church, so at some point our church will probably host this event. Pastors Palmer and Reinke are teaching the lay leaders how to reach other deaf persons with the Gospel and to share about church, the Bible, etc. The training will continue monthly through January 2010. Those representing Deaf LaCrosse have asked for gasoline assistance for making these required monthly trips. Your contributions marked "Local deaf ministry" will help pay for their gasoline.

Another important event will take place on Sunday, March 29thin Watertown, WI, when Rev. Dr. Rodney RYnearson (temporary synodical coordinator for Lutheran Deaf Mission) and Rev. Daniel McMiller (Missions Director for our District) will meet with Pastors Reinke and Palmer and the deaf lay leaders from South Wisconsin to discuss future plans and the proposed new structure for development of deaf ministry in Wisconsin. The day before, Dr. Rynearson will also meet with the temporary Board of Directors which has formed to form a support base for Deaf Ministry since it can no longer be supported by the Synod or Districts. Please pray for both of these weekend meetings-for well-comprehended and fruitful exchange between hearing and deaf persons; and for inspired solutions to the needs at hand. Mike Lewis and Regina McAlear will attend the Sunday meeting; Lisa Kerr will attend the Saturday meeting.
